2022年9月30日,由京领主办、北京德闳学校协办的2022京领全球院士论坛暨青少年科研论坛圆满落幕。

1位诺奖得主,7位来自哈佛大学、剑桥大学、牛津大学的院士、教授围绕“创新人才培养与科研素养提升”等话题,为与会嘉宾带来了一场科研与创新盛宴。

卡德维尔教授是剑桥大学超导体工程终身正教授、剑桥大学工程学院前院长、英国皇家工程院院士。作为领域内的顶尖学者,卡德维尔教授是370多篇论文和专利的作者,也是多个国际期刊和会议的董事会成员。

创新始于研究,研究也能带来创新。卡德维尔教授以创新与研究为主题,强调只有充分理解科学与技术原理、掌握关键技能,包括求知欲、沟通能力、问题解决能力,才能更好地应用知识并实现创新。

大家好。

热烈庆祝“2022年全球院士论坛”的召开,我很荣幸能在这个久负盛名的大会上发表演讲。我是卡德维尔教授,我在剑桥大学担任超导体工程教授,同时也是剑桥大学的战略与规划副校长。

首先,祝贺所有获奖的学生和学校,希望你们可以通过参加入门级的研究,激发兴趣和热情,进而带着更高的激情去解决未来时代更加棘手的问题——你们年轻人会在解决这些问题的过程中发挥巨大的作用。

今天,我想谈谈创新研究。我还会在演讲中讲到剑桥大学的招生,因为创新研究中包含一些非常奇妙的元素,这些元素会为你们在剑桥大学这样的世界领先大学中深造提供支持。

创新始于研究

关于创新研究,我想说的第一点是它来之不易。要想成为优秀的研究者或创新者,你就必须学习,并培养一些技能。对我来说,创新始于研究。大部分的创新都很简单,都有很好的技术基础。理解你所从事的工作的技术性质也非常重要。比如,通过理解科学和技术原理,你更有可能创新,并可以把你的想法预测性地应用在一些有用的事情上。这就是创新的意义所在。

求学生涯是学习如何做研究的过程。攻读科学学位——比如物理学科和生物学科——通常起始于学校,你会在学校发展一些关键技能,变得更加有求知欲、更加善于解决问题、更加善于沟通;到了大学,你会更加了解所学学科的技术性质;在大学的最后一年,你会在资深人士的帮助下完成实质性的项目,你可以和他人共同完成这一项目,但大多数情况下,这一项目会由你独立完成。通过这些,你将学会如何做研究。

在研究中,你首先要做的不是找出问题的解决办法,而是找出问题。你要先提出问题,确定自己要调查什么,然后用客观、明确的方式找出答案。你不必臆测结果,也不必发明数据;你需要做合理的实验、合理的计算、合理的模型,将你的预期与研究的结果进行对比,并得出结论。因此,好的项目能够反映出你为什么要这样评优先级,也能够反映出你的研究方法、研究步骤和研究工具;糟糕的项目也是如此。项目会将你的研究成果清晰地展现出来,所以你在呈现研究成果的时候,必须使用能够被所有人理解的表达方式。

在随后的共同讨论中,你会和其他人一起得出结论,这个结论可能是积极的——这意味着你发现了新事物,你的成果能够使某一技术得到发展;但通常情况下,这个结论可能只会证明你的假设从一开始就是没有根据的,但这并不意味着你的研究没有价值——你的研究阻止了更多人在不会有新发现的领域白费时间做重复工作。

因此,通过做研究,你能学到如何以客观的方式应用知识并得出明确的结论。如果你真的很喜欢做研究,你也可以继续深造、攻读博士,进入一流大学并从事学术领域的研究工作。当然,从事其他领域的工作同样需要做研究。

创新意味着将研究具体化,创新意味着解决问题,创新意味着把想法带进现实,并由此完成用其他方法无法完成的事。这需要你非常具有创造力,你不仅要理解技术的局限性,还要转动脑筋,以其他人无法做到的方式交出新的答案。

创新来之不易。历史上不乏伟大的创新者,比如英国的詹姆斯·戴森,而其中的佼佼者非列奥纳多·达·芬奇莫属。从他的作品中可以看出,达·芬奇创造力非凡,超高的绘画能力也给予他与外界交流想法的机会。

研究带来创新,你可以发散思维、落实想法,去完成以前无法完成的事。研究和创新都非常令人兴奋,你们应该多注意这些,我也鼓励你们这么做。

创新研究与剑桥大学:

剑桥大学招生官看重的能力

创新研究与你们在剑桥大学中的学习关系匪浅。剑桥大学的招生竞争非常激烈,每个名额大约有7个候选人,我们要找的是尖子生中的尖子生。

剑桥大学的所有课程都非常学术化,因此,如果你想要申请剑桥大学,你首先要做的就是确定你是否适合这门课程。你需要做功课,看这门课程都涉及什么,你要确定你申请的就是你想学的课程。如果你决定要申请了,那你就必须拥有足够漂亮的成绩。比如,我们要求你的A-Level成绩达到最高分。

这还不是全部。我们还会考察其他项目。如果你想要申请剑桥大学,你需要写一份个人陈述,阐明你来剑桥大学学习的目的。你需要出色的学术成绩,以及一封名师推荐信。在面试阶段,招生官会提出客观、专业的问题。这些问题与你申请的专业高度相关,招生官希望你能就这些问题给出有价值的答案——招生官希望你调动学过的所有知识,并将这些知识融合,你也可以对从未见过的新事物发表看法。通过你的表现,招生官会对你的学术潜力产生判断。

或许有人认为,剑桥大学会从体育、音乐、人际关系等方面对新生进行判断,但其实不是的,剑桥大学只会从学术上对新生进行评判。除此以外,没有任何因素。所以,如果你决定申请剑桥大学,你需要确保自己对目标专业有丰富的知识储备,对申请领域有足够的学习能力,同时还要有沟通能力——沟通能力是非常重要的。

致青少年的建议:

用众人之力,则无不胜也

最后,我想给你们一些非常广泛的建议。创新研究并不只关乎你个人。你并不是只需要每门课都拿高分,你还需要发展其他技能:你需要和他人交流,你需要在团队中作为一份子发挥作用,你还需要有道德规范,通过引用他人的研究结果来完成你的研究……因此,要保持开放的心态,和他人合作。用众人之力,则无不胜也。

最后,祝愿此次盛会取得圆满成功。再次恭喜获奖的学生和学校,希望我的演讲能够让你们对创新研究产生新的认识。祝你们学业顺利。

Hello.

First of all, a very warm welcome to the 2022 Global Academician Forum. It’s my great pleasure to speak to you at this prestigious event. I’m Professor of Superconducting Engineering at the University of Cambridge and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Strategy and Planning.

I’d like to begin by congratulating all the winners who receive awards today, particularly the schools. Hope the opportunity to become involved in intro-level research will help motivate you and stimulate your interest, passion and desire to engage with difficult issues in the future, which we rely so much on our young people to solve.

What I’d like to do today is to say a little bit aboutinnovation research. I will also talk aboutadmission to the University of Cambridge, because I think there are some really good elements on innovation research that prepares students very well for study at a world-leading university like Cambridge.

Innovation Begins With Research

The first thing about innovation research is that they don’t come easy.You need to learn, and there are skills that you will need to develop to be a good researcher or a good innovator. For me, it begins with research. Most innovation are simple and have a very well-defined technical basis. It’s quite important to understand the technical nature of the work which you’re engaging. For example, by understanding the scientific and technical principles, you’re more likely to innovate and apply those ideas predictively to do something useful. That’s what innovation is all about.

As you go through your educational career, you learn to do research. If you’re studying a science degree, for example, and that could be physical science or biological science, it often starts at school, where some key skills are developed, such as curiosity, problem solving ability, communication ability. When you go to university, you start to learn more about the technical nature of your subject, which will culminate ultimately, usually in the final year, substantial research project that you will engage on, possibly with others, but usually on your own, under the supervision of a senior academic. During this journey, you will learn how to do research.

Research is about not only providing solutions to questions, but asking those questions in the first place.You formulate your question, identify what you want to investigate, and pursue a very objective and well-defined method to find the answers to that question. You don’t presume the outcome. You don’t invent data. You do sensible experiments and sensible calculations, run sensible models, look at the predictions, compare with the experiment and draw conclusions. A good research project will identify why you need to do it in the first place. It will outline your method and explain what you did, what equipment you used, what tools you used. So could be the dreadful modelling. It will clearly present your results, so you will articulate the results in a very open way that other people can understand.

You’ll then discuss those results, and finally, you’ll draw conclusions. Those conclusions could be positive. In other words, you found something new and it will enable a piece of technology to be developed. Or, quite often, you will have found that there was no basis for your hypothesis in the beginning. But that can be equally valuable, because that stops people doing unnecessary work to try to repeat an area that is not going to be productive.Research will teach you the discipline you need to be able to apply technical knowledge in a very objective way and to come up with some very well-defined conclusions.If you really like research, you mend up doing a PhD until the world-leading university and then following an academic research career. Of course, industry also wants research.

Innovation usually takes research and does something specifically with it. Innovation is about solving a problem. Innovation is about bringing thought and understanding to achieve something that can’t usually be achieved by other means. It involves being very creative, understanding technical limitations, and bringing technical solutions together to deliver something new in a way that other people can’t do.

Innovation does not come easy. There are some great innovators, such as James Dyson in the UK. But historically, probably the world’s best ever innovator was Leonardo da Vinci. You should look at some of leonardo’s works. There are companion of various inventions of him. His creativity is extraordinary. Of course, Leonardo da Vinci had the ability to draw and paint and that meant he could communicate his ideas.

Research leads to innovation. It’s all about developing and implementing ideas to achieve something that previously couldn’t have been done before. Research and innovation are very exciting. It is something you should certainly focus on and I would encourage you to do so.

Innovation Research

and the University of Cambridge

Innovation research is very relevant to study at the University of Cambridge.Admissions at the University of Cambridge is very competitive. For every place we have, we have about 7 applicants. We’re looking for students who are in the top 1% or 2% of few percent.

From admission to Cambridge, all of our courses are very academic, so the first thing you need to do when applying to Cambridge is to make sure that it’s the right course for you. You need to do homework and have a look at what it will involve. Make sure you understand what you’re applying to. And you only apply if it’s the course that you want to do. If you do apply, you’ll be required to get top grades in your study. If you’re doing A-Level, we have the highest possible entry requirements.

But that’s not all of it. There are other elements we need to consider. You need to write a personal statement which tells us about your motivation to study at Cambridge. You need to have a good academic record and a good teacher’s reference. In a Cambridge interview, you’ll be asked very objective and very technical questions that relate to the subject that you’ve applied to study. The interviewer expects you to be able to say something sensible about those areas. You can’t really prepare for Cambridge interview. It’s about experience. It’s about getting you to think on your feet and to join together elements of study that you’ve had already and also to make comments on new things that you haven’t necessarily come across. Through your performance, the interviewer will judge your academic potential.

A lot of people think apply to Cambridge is about other things like sport, music or connections. It isn’t. It’s about your ability to study and to do well in the subject which you’ve applied to read. No other considerations are relevant.If you apply to Cambridge, make sure that you read widely around your subject, make sure you have a clear ability in the field and the subject that you’ve applied to study and you’re able to communicate that, because communication is very important.

Suggestions for Teenagers

To finish, what I’d like to do is to give you some very broad advice. To innovate and to do research, it’s about just much more than you. It’s not about getting top marks in every subject. You’re gonna need other skills. You’re gonna need to be able to communicate your work. You’re going to be able to work as part of a team. You’re going to have ethics, and you’re going to have to acknowledge work in the field by the form of references. So be open-minded. Work with your colleagues or classmates, not against them.Together, you will be stronger than you would be on your own.

Finally, I just repeat my best wishes for a very successful event. Congratulations once again. I hope I’ve given you something of an insight into what research and innovation is like. If you’re successful with your studies, good luck.
